What does this site contain?

Through the loan and acquisition of specific items which featured in the National Mountaineering Exhibition at Rheged Discovery Centre, near Penrith, it became apparent that many individuals and organisations are the custodians of immensely valuable material, existing in a wide variety of formats, which vividly illustrate Britain's mountain heritage.  In response to this, the MHT submitted a successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to obtain funding to identify the scope and value of historical material which characterises British Mountain Culture and Heritage.

This site allows the user to search the catalogue of the artefacts, archive collections and other materials held by the Trust and to search its database which lists known mountain heritage resources held in public or private domains.  These resources work in tandem.

There are also biographical details available for some climbers and mountaineers.  This data has been supplied by Colin Wells.  Portrait images have been linked where possible.  Copyright ownership of these images is not know in many cases.  Therefore, any information which could be supplied in respect of this would be much appreciated.

Users must be aware that the database is not a fully comprehensive record of all mountain heritage resources - although that is the long term aim. The Trust is only able to list details of those items which have come to its attention.  If you know of other material which should feature on this database, then please contact the archivist on 01768 840911 or via enquiries@mountain-heritage.org
