Thompson, Stanley Horace (1921-)
Stanley Horace Thompson was born 10th December 1921 in Harrogate, the youngest of three sons. His older brothers Harry and Sid were climbers, pot holers and skiers. Stanley started climbing in the Lake District in 1935 and continued to do so until 2006. He started skiing in 1950 and stopped in 2010 following advice from his GP, when he was 89. Whilst an active climber Stanley spent a lot of time exploring the Alps.He is also a member of the Scottish Mountaineering Club and the Fell and Rock Climbing Club since 1940. He was also one of the original members of the Keswick Mountain Rescue Team. His wife Margaret was a member of the Ladies Scottish Alpine Club who sadly passed away in August 2010.

During his early climbing forays Stanley liked to emulate his hero Stanley Watson by also wearing a white sweater, corduroy trousers, clinker nailed boots and a hat to climb in.

Stanley often climbed with Jim Birkett and was best man at his first wedding. Bill Birkett was born as a result of Jim's second marriage.
Stanley worked as a Civil Engineer and travelled all over the world as a result of this.
