MHT seeks Events and Exhibitions Trustee

The Mountain Heritage Trust (MHT), the heritage arm of the British Mountaineering Council, is a non-profit charity established in 2000 to record and preserve Britain’s rich heritage in the fields of climbing, mountaineering and mountain culture. Second to none in terms of breadth, Britain has a proud legacy in the Alps, the Himalaya and the other great mountain ranges as well as closer to home on British rock.

Pioneers in techniques from the earliest days, Britain’s climbers and mountaineers have also led the way in preservation and conservation of traditions, culture and mountain heritage.

We are seeking to strengthen the Board of Trustees with the appointment of an exhibitions and event’s organiser Trustee. The Trustees provide strategic direction and support to the activities of the Trust through their knowledge, experience and practical skills. There are four Trustees’ meetings per year; Trustees must attend three out of four meetings, one of which can be remotely via teleconference if required.

We are a small charity employing only two staff and, in common with our existing eight trustees with specific responsibilities, we are looking for a trustee who is prepared to be hands on and will take a lead in organising profile and income raising events. The trustee will need to be involved in organising one or two mountaineering lectures, a fundraising dinner and liaising with partner organisations such as the Royal Geographic Society and the Blencathra Field Studies Council.

Exhibitions are an important aspect of raising the profile of the Mountain Heritage Trust so part of this role will also be to help in supporting and coordinating exhibitions that have been negotiated in a variety of settings, using a varied range of artefacts, documents and ‘story’ panels. This is an interesting and challenging role and would suit someone with ideas, imagination and potential for proposing events and exhibitions to meet the needs of the organisation.

We welcome interest from people with a range of skill sets and are particularly keen to hear from those with the following expertise:

  • Events organising expertise
  • Good communication skills
  • Strong networking skills and experience
  • An interest in mountaineering/climbing is desirable but not essential.

Closing date for expressions of interest: 15th February 2019
