The Mountain Heritage Trust (MHT), the heritage arm of the British Mountaineering Council (BMC), is a non-profit charity established in 2000 to record and preserve Britain’s rich heritage in the fields of climbing, mountaineering and mountain culture. Second to none in terms of breadth, Britain has a good legacy in the Alps, the Himalaya and the other great mountain ranges as well as closer to home on British rock. Pioneers in techniques from the earliest days, Britain’s climbers and mountaineers have also led the way in preservation and conservation of traditions, culture and mountain heritage.
As the MHT organisation has grown with numerous important mountaineering collections of documents, information and artefacts coming to the Trust, we need to grow the Board of Trustees to support staff and volunteers based at Blencathra. The Board of Trustees support the activities of the Trust through their knowledge, experience and practical skills. Three new Trustees were successfully recruited in 2017 to support the Trust’s growth. We now need a Trustee who has demonstrated skills in both office management and human resource to work closely in a challenging and interesting environment with the team at the Blencathra office, just outside Keswick.
The Trustee recruited would be expected to attend at least three out of four meetings, one of which can be remotely via a computer teleconferencing system. The Trustee would be required to give some personal support to the team at the Blencathra MHT office by way of time at the office. The ideal candidate would live within a reasonable commuting distance of the MHT office.
The following skills would be preferable:-
- Knowledge of current Employment Law and HR Policies
- Ability to communicate and engage in conversation with Mountain Heritage Board of Trustees, Staff and Volunteers
- Knowledge of office management, processes and systems
- Good knowledge of IT
- Good mediation and negotiation abilities
The following experience would be preferable:-
- A background in climbing/mountaineering e.g. member of FRCC, Alpine Club or other. It would not be essential that membership of a club be current, but the candidate would at least have a background and interest in our mountaineering heritage.
- Previous experience in office management
- Organisational skills and attention to detail
- Demonstrated people management/interpersonal skills/ability to work with a range of people
- Demonstrated communication skills to engage in sensitive conversations in an empathetic, clear and professional manner with people at all levels
Specific to Mountain Heritage Trust:-
- Able to commit to three or four hours on average every couple of weeks at the MHT office
- To be able to support and advise the MHT office staff and volunteers in developing office systems which will support the efficient running of the office
- To be able to regularly liaise with the Chair and Vice-Chair of the MHT Board of Trustees in all matters relating to office staff and be a conduit to BMC in addressing issues around office management and personnel
