Since moving to our new archive at Blencathra we have acquired a huge amount of significant material which document much of Britain's climbing and mountaineering history.

Learning Resources

We're working to expand our learning resources for KS1 and KS2 teachers to use as part of their lessons. These are a great way to introduce more context to the likes of English, Geography, PSHE and Design/Technology classes.

We house over 400 items including important and historic examples of climbing equipment comprising boots, ice axes, clothing, nuts, pitons, karabiners, harnesses, rucksacks, skis and crampons.

Journals and Magazines

Journals and magazines were once the lifeblood of the community, every major club and organisation had one. Early journals such as the Alpine Journal were fundamental to both recording the proceedings of a club and maintaining up to date on what was being climbed.

Sir Chris Bonington's Papers

Over fifty years of climbing and mountaineering history and document expeditions including those to Annapurna in 1970, Mount Everest in 1972, 1975, 1982 and 1985, the Ogre, Mount Kongur, Panch Chuli and Sepu Kangri.
