MHT Search Tips

The broadest search is available by typing your search term into the 'Any Text' box.  This search will return all records where a match has been made to your search term.  If you wish to narrow your search you can do so by selecting from the following options.

Ref No - if you know the specific reference number for the item you are interested in, enter it here and press return.  The record will appear.

Title - similar in function to the Ref No field.  If you know the specific title for the item you are interested in, enter it here and press return.  The record will appear.

Date - if you are interested in the year of a specific expedition or a range of years, using the 'Date' field option in combination with the 'Any Text' field will help to narrow your search.

Level - this field is only of use when searching archive collections which are arranged hierarchically.  If you wish to see an overview of a particular collection, select the 'Fonds' option from this field menu.  More specific elements of the collection can be searched using Series or File or Item from the field menu.

Wildcards

You can use the asterisk symbol ( * ) to extend your search terms. This is known as a 'wildcard'. For example, typing 'Mountain*' into the 'any text' field means that the MHT database will search not only for the word 'Mountain', but extensions of the word such as 'Mountain-s', 'Mountain-eer' and 'Mountain-eering'. You can use wildcards at the beginning or end of a search term and they are particularly useful for personal names where the spelling may be uncertain.

Access Points: Name and Subject

It is also possible to search the database using pre-set index terms (known as authority files) for people and organisations by using the 'Persons A-Z' field or 'Corporate entities A -Z' field. Just type in a word or phrase which features in the name of a person or corporate body and relevant records will be shown. Further information, e.g. biographical information about a person, or administrative information about an organisation, can be accessed from clicking on the relevant record.  Click on the Biography tab located at the lower right hand side of the Access Point menu box.

Like wise, there are pre-set access points which are subject based.  If you want to search for a pre-determined subject, use the 'Subject' field. For this field, click on the highlighted name to find index entries. This will automatically fill in the field for you.

The list of relevant Access Points will be displayed towards the end of the record.  These also provide links to related records.  Moving your mouse over the text will reveal how the link has been made, thus allowing you to consider other avenues of enquiry.

If no records are matched with your search term, then a message will be displayed which will inform you of this.

If your search of the database is unproductive, please feel free to contact the MHT archivist on 01768 840911 or enquiries@mountain-heritage.org. It may be that a record is under construction or that no information is held on the database in relation to your enquiry.

Boolean Searches: And/Or

You can restrict your search by choosing to search for X and Y; or X or Y, by using the options at the bottom of the screen. The default search is 'and' for multiple fields.
