Adventure Summit – 20th February at the Lakes School Windermere
A day of presentations, films, and interactive discussions with people who have made adventure the centre of their lives as writers, explorers and climbers, including Sir Chris Bonington (view biography), Doug Scott (view biography), Adele Pennington, Colin Mortlock, Julie Summers and Ed Douglas.
Three interlinking themes will explore the psychology and attractions of adventure. Why is it a crucial part of many people’s lives? Is adventure associated with risk, extremes or is it a state of mind. Does it matter whether you are a Himalayan climber or weekend explorer? What connects excitement and a sense of well being? Are there lessons to be learnt or is it just thrills people seek?
Morning session 10am- 1pm:
The Paths of Adventure – Presentations by Doug Scott and Chris Bonington followed by a Q&A with explorers and climbers joining the panel. What are the choices and dilemmas faced by professional adventurers? We will screen the historic film South Face of Annapurna as part of this session – the 1970 ascent led by Chris Bonington that changed the nature of Himalayan climbing.
Afternoon Session: 2pm-5:30 pm:
The Price of Adventure – presentations by Adele Pennington, Julie Summers and John Porter followed by a panel discussion of risk, tragedy, motivation and reward. The film “Your Himalaya” - a grand prize winner at many film festivals by the extraordinary Basque climber and film maker Alberto Iñurrategi will be screened as part of this session.
Evening Session: 7:00pm -10pm:
The Spirit of Adventure – Chris Bonington and Doug Scott return to talk about their experiences with other forms of adventure – from sailing the Atlantic to building school in remotes part of Nepal. Presentations, readings and panel discussion with Colin Mortlock, David Hopkins and Richard Lemmey - writers and educationalists - will examine the links between actions, morals and value. From the Outward Bound Schools to adventure holidays - the lessons of adventure – what do children and the young gain from adventure in education? What is the role of commercialisation in adventure?
Tickets on sale in early January: £29.50 (£24.50 concession) for the entire day (includes refreshments) or £14 (£11 concession) for individual sessions – morning, afternoon or evening. Tickets will also be available for purchase on the day by cheque or cash only.
